Homeless Collection Campaign – December 2016

By Sana Ali – Age 13 – Proud member of 7th Goodmayes Scout Group

“Whosoever alleviates the difficulties of a needy person, Allah will alleviate his difficulties in both this world and the Hereafter.” (Muslim)

It was early on a cold and crisp Saturday morning that we arrived at the Gardens of Peace Muslim Cemetery. There are many ways to spend a weekend and what better way to spend it than volunteering to sort out clothes and food to give to homeless people in our local area? After all, ‘charity begins at home’.

We were all excited and had untiring enthusiasm to help the homeless people and so we managed to crack on with the task despite the cold weather.  When we arrived, there was a whole room full of bags and another room full of food!  We anticipated that it would take the whole day to sort everything out, but because of all of our efforts put together and Allah’s help, we finished in one and a half hour, and still had another half an hour to spare, in which we took advantage of the free coffee, tea and biscuits that were provided for us J and having a blast of a time! The staff member Brother Omar congratulated us on our completion and made lots of Dua for us to benefit from our efforts in this world and the hereafter.  He was impressed because he had not expected us to complete the task so effectively and efficiently. Another record broken by 7th Goodmayes Scout Group!  We felt uplifted and eager to do more to help people who are less fortunate than ourselves and we intend to do this whenever the opportunity arises again. Volunteering is an excellent thing, and a lot can be gained out of it. As well as helping people, it also helps us to appreciate what we have and be grateful to Allah for all of his blessings.  After all, when signing up as scouts we made a promise and we must keep to it:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

I promise that I will do my best

to do my duty to Allah and to the country in which I live

to help other people and to keep the Scout Law

…and so we did!  May Allah help us to uphold our promise and translate it into good deeds for ever and ever and ever!  Ameen.
