It’s hard to believe we started the 7th Goodmayes Scouts a year ago!
It all began… in the Summer of 2005 when Abid Abdul-Khaliq and I visited Living Islam, together with a number of other Al Noor families. We saw how much the kids enjoyed the Scout programme and resolved to start a Scout group when we got back to London. I’d been in Scouts as a youngster and knew how much I had benefited – I wanted my kids to grow up with a similar appreciation of the outdoors, confidence and ability to work together to solve problems
We were very fortunate to band up with Abu Musa Hussain, who had been organising family camps in London and Faysal Maruf, who really enjoyed outdoor activities and community projects.
With massive support from Chris & Jackie Geary of Ilford East District we got our first 40 Beavers and Cubs enrolled. In the first term (Summer 2006) we ran a joint programme. In the second term (Winter 2006) we split the sections and increased the numbers to around 50, with two new leaders, Munawar Hassan and Salim Hansa. By the third term (Spring 2007) we were ready to start a Scouts Section, supported by our first two female leaders, Umm AbdurRahman Jung and Umm Tayyeb Aslam. We started two sections, enrolling nearly 50 boys and girls into Scouts.
Big thanks… None of this would have been possible without the support and encouragement of all our young people and their parents. The Trustees of Al Noor have been big supporters too, allowing us to use the school for Beavers & Cubs. Last, but not least, our Leaders and Helpers have given up many evenings and weekends of their own time to make the Scouts a success, without asking for anything in return. Thanks to all of you for your commitment to this excellent project – may Allah bless you and reward you with the best in this life and the next, Amin!
Your help needed… I hope that more of you will join us as Leaders and Helpers! The aim of 7th Goodmayes Scout Group is to develop young people who love Allah and His Messenger, peace and blessings upon him, and have a balanced and enthusiastic attitude to Islam and to the society in which we are living. We provide a balanced programme of fun and educational activities in an encouraging and supportive Islamic environment. We need your help to do this, no matter how big or small your commitment or how much time you have to give.
Enjoy… I hope you enjoy this website. As always, please accept our apologies for our many shortcomings. We’ve learnt a lot and plan to do even better in the future, insha Allah.
